MYSTERE B2

The first prototype of Mystère IV flew for the first time in September 1952 and broke the sound barrier in January 1953.

The final version of Mystère IV manufactured till 1959 appeared in 1956. The aircraft had a wingspan of 10m a length of 14m and weighed 10tons when fully loaded ( jet engine weighed 4.5 tons ). It could reach a speed of 1200km/h (745mph). In the 1960s it lost in value as a fighter plane with the coming of MirageIII aircraft. It was still used for training purposes. Two of them collided in the air above Porquerolles in 1969. One of them crashed virtually intact into the sea, was recovered and then sunk in two pieces at Cap Cenet in 48 metres of water. The other aircraft just smashed into thousands of pieces.
