On 15th December 1851 The Ville de Grasse left Marseille with 54 passengers on board and a load of miscellaneous goods. On the 16th December at 3am she passed The Ville de Marseille a paddle ship. In the pitch dark night her bow crashed into the Ville de Grasse and almost split her into two. It started to rain and the ship sank. The other vessel managed to take a few of the passengers on board and headed for Toulon full steam ahead. Another steam ship came and rescued another few passengers. Between ten and fifteen people perished. The Ville de Grasse lies less than 100 metres from the Michel C. Depth ranges from 44 metres at the top to and 49 metres on the sand. Both wheels without the paddles can be seen. They were powered by two huge rods.
